Data Access and Applications

Data Catalog Access Portal

data portal  data portal provides access to ecological and oceanographic data. Search data collections, access detailed documentation, and with a login, download specific datasets. If you don’t already have an account, use the "Register" link at the top of the portal page. Because of the time to standardize metadata and quality-control data, the currently-available metadata and raw data via this portal are a subset of the entire PISCO data inventory. Data are constantly being uploaded to the catalog, so please contact us if you are having any problems searching for data.

Rocky Intertidal: Trends and synthesis

An interactive map and graphing tool gives customized displays of species trends for specific sites.  Customized data summaries can be created for chosen sites and species.   This tool was developed by PISCO and the Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network

Interactive Map: Use the "Map Display Options" on the LEFT side of the Interactive Map & Graphing Tool to display a specific site, or to filter sites based on the region, MPA status, survey type, etc. When a specific site is selected, summary information is displayed underneath the map, with a link to the specific site page. Use the "polygon" feature to draw a polygon on the map to select a region of interest and then display the sites located within that region.

Grahing ToolUse the "Graph Type" options on the RIGHT side of the Interactive Map & Graphing Tool  to display Biodiversity Survey or Long-Term Monitoring graphs. Different graphs can be displayed based on the survey type (Long-Term or Biodiversity), and by the method within each survey type (Point Contact vs. Quadrat vs. Swath data for Biodiversity; Percent Cover vs. Species Counts vs. Species Size for Long-Term). These dynamic graphs are a powerful way to view data for the specific site and species of interest.

Subtidal Community Survey Map (Years 1999-2006)

1999 to 2006 subtidal data access and summariesFor subtidal data 1999-2006:  The subtidal web application provides a means for detailed exploration of PISCO subtidal survey results by location, time, and taxon. This interactive application provides summary data and charts of site characteristics, species abundance, species length, and covers sites in southern and central California. Site locations are marked as either inside or outside of marine protected areas to enable comparisons, and you can create custom graphs of multiple species that may reveal interesting relationships. This application was developed in 2006.  For more recent data collections, use the data portal or contact us.

Marine Taxonomic Database (last update: 2009)

Our marine taxonomic database is a web-based application that provides images and reference information for marine invertebrates and algae. The images of each species are copyrighted to the acknowledged photographer, and life history information has been compiled from multiple reference texts on marine invertebrates and algae.
